Week 2: Questioning and Asking

Dearest Lord,

Be our comfort and our strength.  This week has been hard for us.  It has been difficult to witness the spreading of  the pandemic caused by the newly hatched COVID-19 virus.  We worry about its high rates of infection and are concerned about the targeting of some of our most vulnerable population.  We have seen our President declare a National State of Emergency, schools and some businesses have shut down, and those of us who can have retreated to the safety of our homes for the near future. Still others don't have that luxury and are on the front lines as health care professionals, retailers who will keep us stocked and fed, and other critical personnel necessary to keep us afloat.  We pray you will keep them safe.

Yet, it is still Lent, and we still want to walk beside you on your Lenten journey.  Perhaps it will be a bit of a comfort to us to focus on the task of self reflection that we started in week 1.  Implicit Bias will still be here when we emerge from this unanticipated "COVID-19 retreat."

Conversations about racism are difficult.  Yet we have pledged to come together, willing to do the hard spiritual work of resisting racism. One important step in doing that is to recognize our implicit biases that color our behavior at an unconscious level.

We thank you, Lord, as we consider for the comfort of our homes our national struggle, our church's struggle, and our personal struggles with racism.

Meanwhile, where there is fear, sow solace, where there is confusion - confidence, and where there is sickness - healing.  Bless the health care workers, and the researchers racing to a vaccine.

In Christ's Name, we pray.

Amen
